Book Reviews of A Countess Below StairsBook Review: Enjoyable and droll historical... Summary: 4 StarsEngland, 1918. Anna is a young countess who has no choice but to flee her home of Russia when the revolution destroys everything that is dear to her. She arrives in England and takes on a job as a scullery maid to keep her real identity disguised. She fools no one in the Westerholme though. First of all, she is delicate, polite and educated -- like a fine lady. Also, she seems too darn cheerful in her household duties, as if everything were a new experience for her. She enjoys constant baths, which is why she goes to the river every day. Will she manage to fool Rupert, the young and handsome Earl of Westerholme? Fresh out of the wars, Rupert has a few interests, all of which include of life in academia. He is also engaged to a lovely woman he met while nursing his injuries from the first World War. Will his future change when he meets Anna? He thinks he is falling for someone beneath him, but little does he know that he is falling for a countess in exile.
A Countess Below Stairs tells a droll, romantic tale set during two very documented wars -- the Russian Revolution and World War I. Eva Ibbotson does a wonderful job writing the historical details of those times. She has wonderful insight on that time period. There are few Edwardian-set novels out there, well written ones at least, and I was impressed with this novel. The story itself is very sweet and there are periods of humor with the eccentric characters in the Westerholme estate as well as Anna's adventures as a maid. Anna and Rupert have a lot of chemistry, which makes the love story palatable as well. But it is the historical detail embedded into the story that truly captured me, and so I cannot recommend A Countess Below Stairs enough. I will definitely give Ms. Ibbotson a whirl in the future.
