Book Reviews of A Brief History of Time

Book Review: The best book read by me!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"A brief History of Time" is an excellent book to read, especially for those who understand Physics well. It is not possible for many to understand everything in this book but what you will understand makes this book worth reading. At least you should try. It holds the idea that there is a unified theory that explains every incidents in this universe. I myself believe this. As I am a Computer Science Student I see the Unified theory in this way -"The computer is only a combination of zero and ones. But yet it covers every aspect of life, the simple logics that are creating so complex ones, isn't it great! So if we take it as a mirror of the universe (We can bulid worlds in computers) then the Universe should have some basic things like the zeros and ones for Computer." If you read this book you will also be able to create your own vision about this universe. Thanks for reading.

Book Review: A brief but concise introduction to the cosmic world
Summary: 5 Stars

A Brief History of time is undoubtedly the best scientific book ever written for non-specialists.Little surprise that it has come from the most brilliant scientist of our day.It only gives an overview of the current quest of hawking and other great scientists of our day towards what they call the ultimate truth i.e a quantum theory of gravity which combines the two most succesful physical theories of the 20th century,Einstein's relativity and quantum mechanics. The book is very informative interesting and provides wonderful insights into the nature of space and time, black holes and a lucid but precise explanation of his work on black holes. He has succesfully explained the basics of modern astrophysics in a way comprehensible even to the layman and instantly evoking your curiosity. What also stands out is his exceptionally good dry wit.Now for the understatement of the century:THE BOOK IS A MUST-READ.

Book Review: Physics and the new God
Summary: 5 Stars

Hawking's book seeks to construct a self-enclosed cosmology which does away with God, placing responsibility for human knowledge of the transcendent with scientists, rather than its other claimants such as priests or capitalists. At the same time, Hawking uses the language of God and religion continuously, in order to reinforce the association of cosmology with transcendence and of himself as the ultimate sage of the transcendent world. Readers should understand that Hawking, like other cosmologists, does not present any universal truths about the universe, but simply renders a carefully fashioned mythology for Western culture, one which I believe should have no more worth than the other mythologies of this world. Anyone who doubts this may do well to consider that for many people, the only place they ever hear about God these days is when they read books on physics and cosmology... why is that?

Book Review: just an excellent book--period!
Summary: 5 Stars

i'm not a scientist, i don't have a ph.d. or even a masters. i finished 'a brief history of time' in a few days and, despite the well-worn saw about this being one of the least-read bestsellers ever, i found it to be more clear, more concise and more entertaining than just about any layman's tome on cosmology i've ever read. keep in mind that the things that hawking is describing to us simply can NOT be accurately described in words; only mathematics, his native tongue, can hope to do that. so ANY verbal description is bound to be, in the end, a rather creaky metaphor (YOU try explaining ten-dimensional spacetime without math). hawking's victory with this book is that his metaphors are apt and easy to understand with a little effort. if you want to understand the universe that einstein discovered, and that bohr and hawking and many others since einstein have added to, this is the book to read.

Book Review: Surprised!
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought since this book was written by stephen hawking, one must encounter material that is too deep and overwhelm sooner or later, and ultimately give up reading which i hate. i hate starting a book not able to finish it, but this book is amazing and entertaining, it's like watching a battlestar galatica episode or some scifi movie, only what's in this book actually is based on classic and modern scientific theories. i'm now 3/4 through the book, it just keeps getting better, i need to say this is after catcher in the rye, my second favourite book to read. i'm not a scientist, but i like to think about things and how they work, and this suits me well. and I'm going to reread it after i'm done with it the first time, since a lot of the basic theorums and principles acutally take more than one session to digest. all in all, it's a great book, makes me want to go back to school, haha.
