Book Reviews of A Brief History of Time

Book Review: Ever wonder how the universe works?
Summary: 5 Stars

I was always interested in science as a kid. I took a few classes on science in high school and college...Astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, etc. Unfortunately, when I was in school, scientist knew less about the universe than they do now. Concepts like Black Holes and time-travel were more akin to science fiction. A lot of things lacked explanation.

This brings me to this book. The author does a great job of explaining what science is all about...particularly astronomy and physics. In addition, he does it in a way that is understandable to someone who is not a scientific genius. There are no mathematical formulas or complicated theorems in this book, which is a nice relief. I would suggest that the reader have some basic knowledge of astronomy and/or physics. It will make grasping the concepts of this book much easier.

If you are looking for a current picture of what scientists believe is the origin of the universe or you want to find out what some of the world's best minds are working on, then this is a great book to start. Highly recommended!

Book Review: The best introduction into theoretical physics
Summary: 5 Stars

First, I must say that this book changed the way I think about the universe. Unbenownst to me, I was still thinking in terms of turn-of-the-century physics. Hawking brought me up to date, and made it interesting. Some may disagree, but I think Hawking's writing style is superb (for those who complained: Come on, how high can your expectations for someone explaining theoretical physics be? Were you expecting someone of C.S. Lewis' calibur or something?), and I often found his humor quite enjoyable. I would HIGHLY reccomend this book to someone interested in knowing where the field of theoretical physics is at (or at least was at. This book is very slightly behind the times now.), and how the universe is being understood by some scientists. I don't buy all of the views Hawkings advances, but they are very interesting to read about, and I think it is good to know where science is at right now. My only complaint about this book is that he should have made it longer, and he especially should have spent some more time explaining String Theory.

Book Review: Irrespective of Educational background a must-read book.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hi there, Most of people know that Stephen Hawking is the only livin theoretical physicist who can be compared to Einstein. Now if u r lookin forward to know the answers of any of the following questions then this is the book u must read. No matter whats ur educational background u will surely be able to comprehend it. *Whats the universe/Big-Bang. *How did it(universe) come to an existence *will it see an end or will live forever *Whats a black-hole *How come massless particle bends in the gravitation field(eg light bends under sun's gravitational field) *How come there is no centre of Big-Bang. *Whats the ultimate aim/goal of Physics. *After Quarks(the most basic particle) how many layers of matter r yet to be discovered.

Ps;-If inadvertently i sounded a bit difficult then hey hold on, read this book and u will realize how simple r answers to all these questions, I m sure it will give u a different perspective towards the life, as this already changed my life in sooo many ways.

Book Review: Popularisation of science without vague simplication
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is a bestseller; Many would have gone through; It gives a grand overview how human concept of universe changed from Galileo's times to the late 20 th centuary. As said in preface, he has avoided using mathematical equations. There are a lot of figures to explain the concepts. It was written with the view that it should reach a lay man. It was lucky that it become a bestseller. Even though it does not demand mathematical maturity, it demands from philosophical sensitivity. That explains why many who would have brought it may not have gone through it. It needs atleast second reading to feel the historical evolution and appreciate the modern physicist's outlook on the important question about origin of our universe. Carl Sagan's ending words in introduction captures the essence : a universe with no edge in space, no beginning or end in time, and nothing for a Creator to do'. Book Review: The Most Fascinating Ideas of Our Time
Summary: 5 Stars

Hawking is perhaps the most influential thinker and genius of our present time. He is now what Einstein was back then. Hawking, however, is a man who has an amazing ability to teach mind-boggling subjects. His ideas about space-time, other dimensions, the big bang, black holes, wormholes and light are simply amazing!! His book is exceptionally interesting and will get anyone to think on a higher level. After reading this book, any reader will be able to amaze others with the knowledge contained within. Hawking is a man full of humor and his often self-depreciating jokes serve to spice up the reading and give the audience a break and an insight into the child-like mind of Hawking and other scientists alike. Illustrations in the book are very good at explaining the most intangible and unimaginable concepts about the nature of our universe. This book will make any ignorant person an inquisitive one. it is perhaps the best and most interesting book of the last two decades. Hawking is a sure hit!
