Book Reviews of 84, Charing Cross RoadBook Review: letters make quick but powerful story of human relationships Summary: 5 Stars
March 8, 1999This is a true story--that's always a plus for me--about correspondence between a New York booklover/writer and the staff of a used and antiquarian book shop in London. These business correspondents evolve over the years into members of a kind of extended family. The book is rather amazing because it is a quick read yet packs a powerful emotional wallop. To enjoy this book, you have to be open to books that explore compassion, emotions, and human relationships in a non-glossy, realistic manner. Normally, I'm a one-read guy. I read a book and pass it on. Yet, I've read 84 Charing Cross Road three times -- so far -- in spite of seeing the movie version three times as well. I'd place 84 Charing Cross Road among my top five favorite books. Rodney
Book Review: Those darn missing letters Summary: 5 Stars
As you read this book you will discover some letters are missing here and there....it angers you. It makes you want to scream. It makes you realize just how much you truly love this book. After having stumbled across the movie one night, I couldn't resist taking a look at the book. Now I will say, I am an extremly busy man, and for me to ever read a book twice is a miracle.....well 6 readings of 84 Charing Cross Road later.....At times you feel a little guilty peeking into this private corraspondance, but at the same time you don't want to tear your eyes away. If you love books, you MUST read this book. If you love life...if you love living...oh forget it...just read this book!!!
Book Review: Impossible to Put Down Summary: 5 Stars
I just read this amazing collection of correspondence between the author and the employees of a small bookshop in London in one sitting. It was entertaining, culturally enlightening and it had a quaintness about it due to the letters being written in the years immediately following WWII.
The friendship that develops between Helene Hanff as a result of her generosity toward the staff of the bookshop is really endearing and the reader feels like he or she really knows these people after enjoying this short read.
A very unusual and highly enjoyable glimpse into the lives of others through their correspondence. Highly recommended for booklovers , anglophiles and others.
Book Review: For Every Book Lover Summary: 5 Stars
On October 5, 1949, a woman in New York sent a letter to a London bookstore she had read about in the Saturday Review of Literature. She was anxious to purchase a few out-of-print books, so she enclosed a list and money with her letter. She had no idea that she had ignited a relationship through letters that would last for 20 years. Helene Hanff and Frank Doel enjoyed one of the most unusual relationships ever recorded in print. If you're a book lover, this is one book you must have. In less than 100 pages, you'll discover two people that embrace books with an intense passion. Touching, funny, and personal, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD is a great way to spend an hour or two.
Book Review: 84 Charring Cross@Helene.com/the year 2000 Summary: 5 Stars
Written half a century ago, Helene Hanff's book harks back but also hurdles forward as e-mail replaces the commom "snail mail" of her day. As technology advances, we now have the power to relate to people not only in England, everywhere! If Helene was still with us, i bet she would save all her pennies to get the fastest access to the internet! this quaint, and irreplaceable book teaches the simple art of communication through writing. in fact, in today's brave new world of internet correspondence, how few of us really know how to reach across miles of wires and truly make a friend across a continent? i recommend this little gem to anyone who hasn't read it!
