501 Spanish Verbs: with CD-ROM
This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). This learning resource tops many Spanish students list of recommended products, and with good reason. This pack combines the comprehensive book - packed with over 500 verbs, their meaning, use and conjugations, along with a CD-ROM of grammar lessons and exercises.
Despite being so thorough, the book is not overwhelming. The information is laid out clearly and concisely so that you can easily find exactly what you are looking for. Each verb has its own page where it is translated. The most common conjugations of the verb are then explained. In addition to these brief explanations the rest of the conjugations are shown in a full list and are followed by examples showing how the verb is most often used.
The verbs are organized alphabetically, so locating them is simple. The page layout is also crisp and clear, with no overflow of additional information to distract you. The book is clear in its goal of providing a neat reference of Spanish verbs, in a format that is fast and easy to use.
The two-tone pages make it even easier to look up verbs.
At the back, the book includes some exercises designed to test your knowledge of some of the trickier irregular verbs. These tests are a great way to refresh your memory or strengthen your understanding of a particular verb. Sometimes the best way to learn is to do, and these quizzes offer a great workout for your grasp of Spanish verbs.
The accompanying CD-ROM also has plenty of practice opportunities to test your verb conjugation skills. The activities on the disc are designed to help you memorize and retain various verb conjugations and are great supplement to studying the book.
Whether your goal is to memorize the top 50 Spanish verbs, familiarize yourself with the various tenses or you are just looking for a complete reference tool to help you in your studies, this is a good solid choice.
Even advanced students and fluent Spanish speakers will find this book and CD bundle useful when they need to look up and unusual or irregular conjugation of a verb. Despite being so comprehensive, the book isn't too large to be carried around in a bag or purse, so it is an excellent traveling companion for Spanish students of all levels.
These are the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish.
1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasent to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.
2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs, especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs.
3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions are entirely in Spanish. I use this one only because it was recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches the language.
