I can't say enough about this book, it had an immediate impact on my game. Each time I studied a new section, I got better. I have read many backgammon books but this one is easily the most helpful, regardless of whether a computer disagrees with his recommended play on occasion. In hindsight, I think it is the method, as much as the content, that is so helpful. Once he introduces a concept and provides a few examples, you begin to recognize the concepts in the subsequent examples and in your own games. It is really eye-opening and will change the way you play and how you approach certain positions.
I often run into complicated positions where I don't know the best way to proceed, and where I make mistakes - this book has helped me tremendously in those situations. He teaches you how to think - what to look for, the strengths and weaknesses of the position, the threats and opportunities that exist, etc...
There are alot of amateurs with backgammon programs (me included). It doesn't take any backgammon insight to set up positions on your backgammon program and point out disagreements with the author. They can show equities for this move or that, but they do not teach you the "Why?". Computers can tell you what you did wrong after the fact, but this book will teach you how to evaluate positions and how to determine the best move on your own.
The format and breadth of the book are such that it can be used as reference book which you can consult when you want to address certain aspects of your game.
All of Robertie's backgammon books are excellent. "Backgammon for Serious Players" is for more experienced players, but it doesn't follow the excellent format 501 follows; and "Backgammon for Winners" is also outstanding for "beginners", or anyone who is still struggling to improve.
