Book Reviews of 30,000 Years of Art: The Story of Human Creativity Across Time and Space

Book Review: A VAST ARRAY OF ART
Summary: 5 Stars

A vast array of artwork spanning the history of mankind, most of which I had never seen before. Although some of the most notable works (such as the Mona Lisa ) were ommitted, other lesser known pieces were exhibited. The artwork not only includes paintings, but also pottery, sculpture and various other forms. Many, if not most of the art shown is by unknown artists. The art is displayed in chronological order, so you can see what is being developed at the same time throughout the world. This is probably the most art that can be placed in a single book and still be portable. This book is truely massive and HEAVY! After sitting for an hour with this book on my lap, my legs hurt. So I would recommend a strong table. Anyone interested in art would surely enjoy this book and would return to it over and over again.

Book Review: Beautiful inclusive book I have been waiting for
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been hoping for a book that truly includes numerous cultures equally in the history of art. Most art history books focus on Europe, but this one give beautiful illustrations of works from all over the world. I teach art history and this is now our text. There are amazing works that I have never seen before and the images are great. Each has a short bit of written information which is just perfect for people that are learning about these various cultures and their art. The binding is an issue if you use the book a great deal as I do. The unfortunate size in order to create this inclusive book makes it a problem to open and close a lot. I might have made it a 2 volume book set in a box although then Phaidon would not be able to sell it so inexpensively.

Book Review: Amazing journey through time, space and culture
Summary: 5 Stars

This huge book contains a brief summary of the history of human artistic and cultural achievements. The art works are arranged in a stictly chronological order and you will be able to appreciate the way human cultures developed. While different artistic traditions started differently, with time they tend to merge and influence each other. Every work is accompanied by a succinct label stating the place of origin and the approximate time that it was made, so you will never be lost.

The pictures themselves are of high quality. The descriptions are also engaging rather than prosaic. I've learned really a lot through this gigantic book.

Book Review: I loved it
Summary: 5 Stars

Each artwork has a whole page for itself. A large coloured photo and some information on it. This book lets you sample artwork throughout the years from all over the world. I say "sample" because it doesn't go too deep into the history or meaning of each piece. Doing so would probably turn it into a mess.

If you want a narrow, in depth analysis of one culture or style, this book would not be what you're looking for. If you want to know what artwork has been made for 30,000 years or you just like beautiful things to look at, then you might like this book.

Plus, its pretty cheap for it's size.

Book Review: Amazing work
Summary: 5 Stars

With great cynicism, I bought this book at the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, NM where I am a docent. By arranging pieces from around the world according to time periods, a whole new perspective evolves. Very exciting to see what's happening in different places at different times around the globe. The images and their placement is first rate. Having recently returned from Papua New Guinea, I was especially interested in those pieces--they are stunning. Thank you Phaidon.
