Book Reviews of 2007-11 General Class

Book Review: Where's the beef?
Summary: 2 Stars

I would prefer a more traditional text book that introduces the material in a logical and organized manner. Once the material is presented and explained, then worry about the questions and answers.

This book dives right into the questions and gives brief background information but it's so disjointed that it's hard to synthesize. And sometimes his explanations are slightly demeaning (see his explanation for question G5C15 on page 132)

There is a temptation with this book to memorize and regurgitate on test day.

I don't think my 'dream book' exists so plow through this one and you'll pass the test.

Book Review: Just do it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased Gordon West's Technician book and CD set along with the General book and CD set in early April. My goal was to prepare for concurrent testing for both licenses, provided I passed the Technician exam. I read the books, highlighting questions, answers and Gordo's memory tips on the ones that gave me trouble. The CD's were invaluable as they allowed me to use daily commuting time to listen to Gordo's explanations and memory joggers. On May 1, I passed both tests (Technician with no errors and General with one wrong answer) in a total of 18 minutes including time to grade the Technician exam. I've ordered his NEW Extra study materials and anticipate the same degree of quick, sound success. If you want to get your ham ticket, trust Gordo!

Book Review: Great Study Guide!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was able to read this book once, went back and reviewed the day of the test and past my first time! I highly suggest it.

Book Review: General Class Amateur Radio Element 3 FCC License Preparation
Summary: 3 Stars

The book has some good tips for remembering some of the questions related to the test and has the complete question pool. I tend to learn better with the explanation of theory and process followed by questions. I was able to pass the exam without problem but much of it was by rote memory of the questions rather than an understanding of the principles.

Book Review: Exceptional Help from a General
Summary: 5 Stars

Interesting, organized and well thought-out, the Ham guide book for the General Class license by Gordon West was a big help for me. Since I have not had a Ham license for 53 years, I really needed help. West's book made the General Class Exam relatively easy. I was so pleased with the General Class book that I also purchased his Extra Class license book and quickly passed that Ham exam. As a writer of technical subjects as well as novels, I know when a writing job is well done. Put me down as a very satisfied customer--Thomas S. Fiske, KI6OBL
