Book Reviews of 1945Book Review: VERY P;LAUSIBLE ALTERNATIVE SCENARIO Summary: 5 StarsI would rate this a five of five star book for action and a four star for the scenario. We do not see enough of Hitler, but are primed for a final show down between Harrison-Hitler and Skorzeny-Martell. I, like many others, are waiting for the sequel. I hope it appears soon!
Book Review: FACTUAL IN AN ALTERNATE WORLD Summary: 5 StarsFIRST OF ALL I GREATLY ADMIRE AND RESPECT MR.GINGRICH. I WAS BORN IN OAK RIDGE; LIVED THERE FOR 2 YEARS FROM 1947 TO 1949. WE THEN MOVED TO KINGSTON, TN. MY DAD HIRED ON AT K-25 IN 1945 AFTER RETURNING FROM EUROPE.HE LATER TRANSFERRED TO X-10 TAKING A MEDICAL RETIREMENT IN 1979. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE WORKED ALSO AT K-25 FROM 1975 TO 1996 WHEN I WAS DOWNSIZED. THE BOOKS ALTERNATE HISTORY ESPECIALLY ABOUT EAST TENNESSEE WAS GREAT FUN. MOST OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS WERE ACCURATE ENOUGH TO BE VERY REAL. I WOULD HOPE THAT MR. GINGRICH AND CO-AUTHOR WOULD FINISH THE SERIES. NOW FOR THE SAD PART. MR. CLINTON HAS SO DEMORALIZED AMERICA AND ALLOWED OUR GREAT MILITARY TO FAMISH THAT THE SCENARIO MAY NOT BE ALL THAT UNREAL. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND NEWT GINGRICH. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THESE FEW WORDS. JERRY W. WALDEN 1227 JAMES FERRY ROAD L-31 KINGSTON, TENNESSEE 37763 HONANDTTBEAR@WEBTV.NET
Book Review: Sad Summary: 1 StarsI'm rarely thoroughly disappointed with the books I read for pleasure because I'm so selective about what I'm going to read. But I'll pardon myself since this was the first alternate history I ever read. The dialogue is completely devoid of any subtlety, the Germans are reduced to one-dimensional villains (hey, I'm no admirer of the Third Reich, or any state for that matter, but don't insult my intelligence with arbitrary good-guy and bad-guy charicatures), and the story seems poorly researched. It is true that there are no plausible alternate histories, only believable ones, and I gave Newt Gingrich the benefit of a doubt that there would be evident political bias in the book. But the message in defense of American intervention in conflicts abroad hits the reader over the head. The aknowledgement at the beginning is a dead giveaway to the far-from-subtle message to come, but I wasn't about to judge the book until I'd read the last page. Well, I have now, so I'll judge it. It was a waste of my time and money, and a shallow, pulpy excuse for an alternate history, and I felt a little bit dumber for a long time after reading it. If you want to read good alternate history, read Harry Turtledove ("The Guns Of The South," The "World War" series, "How Few Remain," the forthcoming "Great War" series, all well worth reading). William, if you're reading this review, it's nothing personal; I liked Wing Commander: Heart of The Tiger! But really, if you're the pulp-fiction type then that's your thing; go ahead and buy the book. Otherwise, find something else.
Book Review: It got me in from the first chapter. I'm eager for more ! Summary: 4 StarsI picked this book up at an outback South Australia newsagent whilst desperate for something to read on vacation. Mills and Boon isn't my cup of tea so 1945 was the best option. Imagine my surprise (and my wife's disgust) when the holiday took a back seat. I simply could not put it down. I had to keep telling myself that this was not how WWII ended. Since then I have hunted high & low for the sequels only to find out through other readers comments that it isn't yet published. Newt, how can you do this to me ! Hurry up for my sake and all the other readers like me. Take off your politician's hat and do things quickly for a change.
Book Review: Terrific book, fast paced, realistic, excellent "what if". Summary: 5 StarsJust finished it, dying for the sequel. Realistic blend of fictional and historical characters. More please Mr. G!
