The text includes vivid descriptions of the bizarre crime scene and insight into early theories about the tragedy from officials, neighbors, doctors, friends, and family members of the victims. Fourteen witnesses testified including Dr. Clark Cooper, Marshal Hank Horton, Ed Landers, Ross Moore, Fen Moore, Jessie Moore, Harry Moore, Charles Moore, Mary Peckham, Ed Selley, Blanche Stillinger, Joe Stillinger, Lee Van Gilder, and Dr. Frank Williams. As historian Dr. Edgar V. Epperly says in his introduction, "The Inquest transcript is compelling to read and certainly the starting point for anyone who would truly understand the Villisca axe murders."
